What a classic!!!! Liberace’s comedic timing with a good natured Lou Ferrigno!

Lou Ferrigno is still around you can learn more about him at his official website.

Check out the homage to Liberace and the songs done in mention and tribute of Lee at the Queer Music Heritage blog.  This is a blog written with a whole lot of passion for many artists.

This just popped up onto YouTube.  It is the opening of the Liberace show as it appeared in Las Vegas.  Liberace was one of the first performers to combine a video presentation with his stage show.

This includes appearance by Scott Thorsen so I wonder if it will be reenacted in the upcoming Behind the Candelabra film.

The Liberace Show 1981

Ray Carrillo the elected Riverside County Coroner at the time of Liberace’s death has died. So outrageous was his conduct during the investigation of Lee’s passing the estate filed complaint with the county board of supervisors.

Read coverage from the Desert Sun

As suspected by Lee’s loved ones this is all famously Ray Carrillo became known for as his legacy was ensuring that Liberace did not get to retain his privacy in death as he wished protected while he was alive.

Carrillo’s handling of Liberace’s death was so outrageous that it led the American Medical Association to make a national plea for confidentiality!

AMA issued a plea that it serves no public interest to release the details concerning Liberace’s death. – Click on image to read the full article

There is a difference between that a person was exposed to the AIDS virus and it having been the cause of death. – Click on image above to read article

Liberace’s was not the only case for which Carrillo received notoriety including attacks on a cryonic laboratory, the accidental cremation of a murder victim and multiple administrative issues.   His office also had deputy coroners who left behind body parts from autopsies in a house to the surprise of its new owners.

Carrillo famously ordered the Riverside Sheriff to pull over the hearse containing Liberace’s body on its way to the funeral home to divert it to the county coroner’s office. Liberace’s personal physician had signed the original death certificate as heart failure.  Close personal friends including Mr. Steve Garey of Palm Springs California contend to this day it was heart failure and advanced emphysema which led to his death as primary factors rather than AIDS.

News Story about the diverting of Liberace’s body from Forest Lawn Cemetery to Riverside County for autopsy with Ray Carrillo

Liberace desired to be remembered as fabulous! talented! entertaining! brilliant! and a performance genius! Not as the victim of a stigmatized disease.

Ray Carrillo’s witch hunt into the cause of Lee’s death which even the original autopsy did not determine was caused by AIDS gave him temporary notoriety and is recognized as the achievement of his life.

Thankfully the spirit of Liberace has transcended even the labeling of his death by means he never wanted out to the world. Instead the world continues to love him for the character he was in life. So in the end it was the evolution of our society and the enduring genius of Liberace who won at the end of the day.

If Liberace could see today I am sure he would be thrilled. His biggest fear that he would be remembered for what killed him, over his talent, never came true. Lee is remembered as the man with a big heart and a marvelous personality. He was both an artist and a humanitarian. Today Lee brings a smile to our face empowering a world to be just that much more glamorous.

I wish that Lee were alive today to see  a world where his sexual identity would not have caused him to be afraid of what people would think of him. Today if Lee were still alive we would love him more for being entirely who he was publicly.

Lee lives on through my dear friend Steve Garey. Steve was his acknowledged protege and the training he received from Lee propelled his own career which included work as Frank Sinatra’s pianist. Most importantly Lee was his best friend. I know that February 4th will be a hard day for Steve remembering that day when he had to go out and tell the world his friend had passed.

This has been a hard year for Steve. Sending his friend a few kind words and knowing that he is in your prayers is another thing Lee would have wanted on this anniversary.

This February 4th in memory of Lee do something to make the world just a little more beautiful. Roll down the windows in your car and play one of his tunes be it the Kitten Rag or Ave Maria.  Do something nice for animals.

If you are in Las Vegas how about putting some roses on the grave of his pets. If you are in Hollywood about putting some roses on his grave.

Most of all embrace the marvelous person that you are and know in the immortal words of Liberace:

Nobody will believe in you unless you believe in yourself.

What do you know its Liberace, Herman’s Hermits, and Louie Armstrong. Classic swingin’ action!

Lee’s international legacy lives on!

Showy, flashy, ostentatious, garish, sensational, vivid. These are all words that apply to piano maestro Liberace, the original ‘King of Bling’ and arguably the most flamboyant entertainer of the century.

It is time to shine! Popular pianist Rocco de Villiers pays tribute to the “king of bling”, the most flamboyant entertainer ever: pianist Liberace.

Just before his death 20 years ago in 1987, on February 4 Liberace stated that he wants to be remembered for 3 things : his shows, music and costumes.

After Rocco’s sell out seasons at the Rhumbelow and the rest of the country, Rocco is back with this very popular over the top production celebrating the glamour and outrageous nous of Liberace, the most over the top performer after Lady Gaga.

The show has, however a few new additions. New and bigger candelabra, all the costumes, the quirkiness.

But most importantly all new music in the updated performance from Rocco’s new album, including most of Liberace later interpretations. The new music include, Don’t cry for me Argentina, Music of the night, Lara’s Theme from Doctor Zhivago, Music Box Dancer, Ballade for Adeline and Sleepy Shores.

The perfect show for the perfect night. Come and listen and see all the bling, the balls, the sequince, furs and feathers – and the piano excellence of Liberocco.

Rocco’s cd’s, cocktails books, aprons and t-shirts available at the door.

PLEASE HELP AND SUPPORT AS THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE VENUE

Example of the fine fur work that Anna did for Liberace

Reading this story today about the violent attack on Liberace’s devoted friend Anna Nateece broke my heart. Please read this story about her in the Las Vegas Sun from just six months ago.

Read about her wonderful work from Las Vegas Luxury Magazine.

Now vow that for a woman so talented and giving that the tragedy below not be what defines her legacy.

Family of elderly attack victim optimistic about recovery

Link to video about this terrible crime

Remembering attack, Anna Nateece says, ‘I didn’t know whether I was alive or dead’ – Read this story by Sun reporter John Katsilometes

I immediately called Lee’s friend Steve Garey of Palm Springs California to inform him of the unfortunate news. Steve explained that Anna was among the most devoted, sincere, dedicated friends of Liberace’s life. He believes Anna will make a full recovery because in heaven Lee is pulling for her.

Steve would like us all to join with him in prayer that Anna will recover from this horrific attack and that the terrible person who did this to her is brought to justice. He will personally come to Las Vegas and sit in the trial to ensure that a monster who would hurt someone so loving and sincere who brought great comfort to his best friend pays for what he has done.

The family has not asked the public for support in any way. Steve is contacting Anna and her family to extend any help that he can to them through those who are still around who know first hand the loving devoted friend she was to Lee who would never have wanted her to suffer in this senseless way.

I received the great news from Rod Russell that he and Wes Winters have both spoken to Anna Nateece and she is doing well on her path to recovery.

Crime Stoppers (702) 385-5555 in Las Vegas is seeking information leading to the arrest of the person who did this to her.

I am tremendously disappointed that after all of the work Anna has done on behalf of the Liberace foundation no mention is made of this tragedy nor any well wishes from any of its social media outlets to help bring her attacker to justice. This is not following through on preserving Lee’s legacy. If Lee were alive today he would be putting funds toward ensuring that Anna is comfortable and a special fund set up to ensure her attacker is brought to justice!

Kevin Eck of the Baltimore Sun recognized Liberace as the number 7 WrestleMania celebrity of all time!

Nice to know that a professional expert on all things wrestling is giving Mr. Showmanship his due for coming on the show as time keeper. The footage of Liberace is NOW AVAILABLE on YouTube see below.

Read Kevin Eck’s blog post about Liberace by clicking here or the image above.

Check out my earlier post about Liberace’s WrestleMania appearance.

Lee’s appearance starts at 7:25 in the clip to 9:06 captures the priceless commentary that this is a “happening” and Lee dancing with the Rockettes! The crowd was on its feet! Mr. Showmanship conquered WrestleMania!

YouTube requires that to view this video you click on it a second time to view it on the YouTube website.

You have great taste Pinchy! He traveled all the way from Hawaii in search of Liberace. Found him at Madame Tussuad Wax Museum.

Poor Pinchy! Traveled all the way from Hawaii to find the Liberace museum was closed!

Carluccios Tivoli Gardens originally opened by Liberace is still open for dinner service and Pinchy can go in there to sit at the Liberace autographed piano in the most marvelous uniquely kitsch dining room in Vegas.

They say the place is haunted by Liberace and mobsters, but I am sure they would all love Pinchy.

Check out Pinchy’s other adventures on his blog.

The inside lobby of the Pantages Theater hosted many Hollywood greats for the premiere of A Star is Born including Liberace and Elizabeth Taylor.

Elizabeth Taylor at 10:17 Lee is right after her at 10:41

What a wonderful time it was back then. Read the article Memories of Taylor and company in Hollywood’s revolutionary 1950s

Read about Liberace and Elizabeth Taylor from the Wonderful World of Liberace

They are on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars together. They are not at the same cemetery. Lee is at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills and Elizabeth Taylor is at Forest Lawn Glendale.

According to several reports Lee was once engaged to marry Joanne Rio whom once worked as Elizabeth Taylor’s stand-in. IMDB on Joanne Rio.

To truly appreciate the work of anyone who has passed it is touching to see them as their greatest fans did. Check out the work of Richard Bassett on YouTube. He has made more than 120 videos about Elizabeth Taylor.

See his Angel video below:

Elizabeth Taylor said the word AIDS before it was ever uttered in the oval office. She fought for AIDS research. Her courage in Hollywood about this terrible disease was in a world where performers including Liberace feared deeply in their souls about being labeled with the disease fearing that it would forever tarnish the memory their fans had of them.

Elizabeth lived to see the world turn around, Lee did not, but we all know his memory is about his talent first and foremost.

Mr Basset makes the following request on his site if  you enjoy his videos:

Synopsis from official Episode Site

America could not wait to see the show, read this clip from the paper in Bangor, Maine.

Clip from the show where Lee asked the audience to read aloud from Valentines cards:

My favorite part is the tour of his Las Vegas home followed by his convenient arrival several hours away in Long Beach at the Queen Mary.

Lola Falana appeared in Liberace’s 1979 Valentine’s Day Special. They posed together in matching white fur coats.

Essence Magazine paid tribute to Lola in May 2010 as a great star who went on to become one of the highest paid women on the Las Vegas strip.

Great lay-out from February 2010 of Lola’s work.

So get out there and LOVE FABULOUSLY! This Valentines Day!

This story told about Liberace’s influence on his life pianist Jeff Stice recounts his visit to the museum closing with a masterful performance:

You can also catch Jeff with the Triumphant Quartet.

Interested in becoming a pianist from the comfort and humility of your own home Jeff has an online piano lesson system.

Lee had so many homes to keep track of! This property was brought to my attention by someone who lives part time in Lake Arrowhead.

Description: Former home of Liberace located right on the point of Hamiltair’s Shoreline. Dazzling Lake Views from all points. Beautifully manicured grounds and gardens. Double Dock. 6 Bedrooms and 6.5 Bathrooms include grand master with Fireplace and glamorous Bath. Candelabras are still mounted on the front stone pillars. One can understand how much this nostalgic Lodge gave pleasure and inspiration to the famed showman! The rooms are voluminous and flow one in to the other for easy entertaining. There is a separate Billiard Room and Gym with Sauna and Spa Tub. The Family Room features a conversation Wet Bar overlooking the gorgeous Lake. There is some TLC and Decorating to do here, but oh, the home feels good…and the location…Superb!

You can also take a virtual tour from the realtor’s website.

This is the Google map of the location. You cannot get to the home to view from the street because Hamilitair estates is one of the oldest gated communities at Lake Arrowhead. Liberace mentions the purchase of this home at the end of his book “The Things I Love” in the epilogue but does not detail any adventures there in his next book the “Wonderful Private World of Liberace.” Setting on a lot listed as just over half an acre perhaps it did not provide the level of privacy necessary for a star of his caliber.

The value estimated by Zillow of the property is just over $1 Million dollars compared to its asking prices. The listing was removed in June 2009 according to Zillow with a list price at that time of $4.6 million dollars.

Liberace and Neil Diamond performed on the same episode of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour it originally aired Sunday January 10th, 1971.

The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour Season 3 Episode 16 :: Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Liberace, Larry Storch

No online copy of the episode exists.

The Loved One was billed in its trailer as “the motion picture with something to offend everyone!”

Here is the house as it stands today as a separate historic monument. This book entry from the book Wauwatosa By Wauwatosa Historical Society details the unique archectecture of the property that certainly fit well with Lee’s tastes.

The deal fell through and aren’t we happy that it did so that Vegas was home to the museum!

Buzz abounds that Steven Soderbergh will start filming of a bio-pic based on the life of Liberace. While it may be campy to have Matt Damon play Scott Thorson, there are many matters in Mr. Thorson’s publicly published history that should lead us all to view his version of events with suspicion.

As Mr. Thorson has sued in the past for defamation I leave to the readers to follow the links to these public published reports and decide if these are the eyes through which an icon should be immortalized.

Liberace’s Ex-Lover Claims Gay Affair With Jackson

Liberace left behind many whom can tell the truth about his life unclouded by drug addiction, greed, and revenge. I hope the film producers consider the source when painting the picture of a legend through someone who clearly seeks attention through involvement with celebrities.

It would be a terrible shame to see someone who has had obvious drug problems financially benefit from royalties on a film when many explain that what had happened with Liberace in life was his sincere desire not to have his fortune fuel drug abuse.

Steven Soderbergh is so vastly talented I believe that he can deliver a better biographical account of Liberace’s life than this schmaltzy made for TV movie.

Liberace has two stars on the Hollywood Star Walk both inducted on February 8, 1960:

In recognition of his musical achievements his star is at: North side of the 6500 block of Hollywood Boulevard

a second star in recognition of his television achievements: North side of the 6700 block of Hollywood Boulevard

The Weekly World News LOVED Liberace!

Not only was it reported that he was wandering the streets dressed as woman in 1993 the paper had several interesting tales to tell about him.

Lee probably would have enjoyed the attention, but poo-poohed the poor photo editing and even worse the wardrobe selection if he had been dressing as a woman!

Truth is often stranger than fiction, add Hollywood, professional wrestling, and Liberace onto the same performance stage and it makes for a historic evening that only generations later we would scratch our heads marveling at how it ever did happen.

The perspective of this story from how the match that was to happen between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan is detailed in his blog.

Bring in Liberace! He appeared on the same stage as the Hulkster cheering him on in his future match on Season 10 of Saturday Night Live. Quote from the history of Wrestlemania

You can catch Lee in the ring at 2:19 in this video

In addition, Liberace, Muhammad Ali, and Billy Martin were involved in the match.

I have not been able to find full video of this match or the Saturday Night live episode from the night before. I am sure that these would reveal the great sense of humor Liberace had for all forms of entertainment. Liberace is billed as guest time keeper.

I love this promotional commercial for the event which has Liberace at the end (1:17 into video) as the special event time keeper.
